Instructor Bio

David West,CFEI / KLEC Police Instructor, is a Retired Detective, with the Kentucky State Police, specializing in Arson Investigation and Electrical Fire Analysis for the past 25 years. Mr. West’s career began in the Electrical trade as a Contractor, he then became a State Certified Electrical Inspector, and used this electrical background to join the Kentucky State Police Arson Division examining electrical failures on fire scenes. He became a Police instructor, specializing in Electrical Fires and Fire Related Deaths, at the State Police Academy. His expertise has assisted State and Federal Agencies in examining electrical wiring systems, generating official reports, and testifying as an expert witness in cases.

Course Objectives

Course Objectives:

Fire investigations is the process of obtaining facts about a fire to bringyou to the conclusion—the Origin of the Fire and Cause.

This two and a half day class will provide you with the tools and knowledge to helpyou obtain true facts about any fire investigation. This is an entry level class for new personnel entering into fire investigation.

Supposition, misinformation and false intuition will lead to false conclusions.  Using the Correct protocol based on empirical data with proper analysis equals a credible case.

Upon Completion:

The attendee will have been provided the knowledge to perform a successfulorigin and cause conclusion:

     Basic Investigation Methodology

     Fire Behavior

    Fire Patterns

    Origin & Cause Determination

     Determining Accidental Causes

     Incendiary Fires

     Electrical & Appliance Fires

    Evidence Collection

    Recording The Scene

    Legal Considerations

Each Student will be asked to participate in group exercises given different assignments of the above objectives from the instructor.
