Instructor Bio
Retired Police Captain Rick Morrisonbegan his career in public service in 1989 as a Corrections Deputy for Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. In 1994, he served as a Law Enforcement Officer for Kenneth City Police Department in Florida. Rick continued his career in Law Enforcement and joined the Roanoke Police Department in 1996. During his 22-year tenure at the Roanoke Police Department, Rick assumed many roles and responsibilities to include becoming a General Instructor for the Department of Criminal Justice Services in 1999, providing professional instruction to police departments, and community groups throughout the country.
Since his retirement at the rank of Captain, Rick started Inspired Policing Solutions LLC, which is a consulting and training company geared toward impacting organizational transformation and community culture change.
Rick has had the privilege to teach and consult many police agencies across the country. His area of expertise is in the following courses: Leadership, Organizational Change, Mentoring the Underachieving Employee, Community Policing and Effective Problem Solving, Crime Mapping, Hot Spot Policing, Community Policing and Countering Violent Extremism, and Managing the Training Unit.
Although Rick is retired from law enforcement, he continues to work closely with community leaders, police organizations, and non-profit organizations to impact meaningful change in Roanoke and other cities and communities across the country.
Rick has attended the first annual Law Enforcement Leadership Seminar sponsored by the FBI National Academy (FBINA); he is also a graduate of the 31st Professional Executive Leadership School. Inspired Policing Solutions currently partners with Benchmark Professional Seminars, Virginia Center for Policing Innovation, Blueline Training, Milco Training Group, Virginia Chiefs of Police Foundation, and Crime Center for Training and Services.
Rick resides in Roanoke, Virginia, and is married to Janet and the proud father of a son, Nathan and two beautiful stepdaughters Lindsey and Lauren.

Course
Objectives
The student will gain knowledge and explore the benefits of implementing a Mentoring program within their organization.
Through adult learning activities; class discussions, work groups, instructor feedback, power point, and media presentations the student will engage in thought provoking concepts, ideas, theories, and practices of mentorship.
The student will learn the basic principles of leadership and its impact on effective mentoring.
The student will define, compare, and contrast leadership verses management and the impact they both have on a mentoring program
This two-day course is designed to be highly interactive, and student participation is required.

Make-up of today’s law enforcement organizations
Avoiding a Toxic Work Environment
Recognizing employees that need mentoring
Mitigating citizen complaints, Mentoring Vs. Coaching
Considerations and benefits of a mentoring program
Generational differences
Motivating employees
Determining appropriate discipline considerations
Communicating expectations and making unpopular decisions
Gut- check (is this a job or profession?)
